For all the veterans and their families…..”Saving My Heart”.

Someone recently presumptuously commented on this video “you don’t know Yes”, I suppose because they thought I was creating a video somehow endorsing war (or even the military)….which I wasn’t.  I’m sorry they weren’t able to understand that the video was about PEOPLE, both those serving (being in the military doesn’t make you a warmornger) and their families who must endure the hardships and anxiety of separation during deployment.   The video reflects the love people share for one another and that’s a sentiment that I feel certain Yes would approve of.  I’m sorry that someone would shallowly perceive of it as pro-war, pro-military, pro-anything besides pro-love.

So yeah….I do know Yes.To ALL THE VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES AROUND THE WORLD….”Saving My Heart”…..this one’s for you! (P.S.  If you started a war….this one’s NOT for you! 😉

Saving My Heart was released in the spring of 1991 on Yes’s thirteenth studio album, Union. This is one of my very favorite Yes songs….I’ve always loved it and felt it should have been a huge hit. I hope my video will open it up to a few more people.

Union is a seriously great Yes album, and though it ranks very high with fans, it wasn’t received very well upon release. I was somewhat disappointed with the previous album, Big Generator, but this one had them back firing on all cylinders! I remember the anticipation for the album, it was quite a big deal that all the guys were together again (Man, check out the line up for this thing EVERYBODY was involved! LOL!), and being thrilled with the result. It was just packed with great music and I still feel it’s one of the greatest later day Yes efforts.

I wanted to make a video in honor of those individuals and their families who have had to endure the anxiety, heartbreak and hardships caused by the separations of deployment. The video kept veering into more tragic images of loss, and some shots of Arlington National Cemetery were beautiful, but those type images were overpowering the less tragic focus of the video, and in the end I removed all except two, including the image of the grave of Ryan F. Coyer. This image had a powerful impact on me, the single image said as much as needed to be said about the ultimate sacrifice millions have made for our country…..it is to their memory that I dedicate my video.

As usual, a SPECIAL THANKS to everyone who’s art made this new art possible!

Hope you enjoy the video and THANKS for watching!

[Lyrics]
In the street where we live there’s a place called desire.
There’s a stone-cold intrusion of mad man’s fire,
But he leaves when the lust and desire released,
And you’re left with an empty room in peace.

Saving my heart for you – You do what you want to do
There’s a place in my heart for you – This time I’m watching you
Till the blood in my veins run dry – I’ll be there to testify
There’s a place in my heart for you…

I’ve been lost in the maze of emotional confound.
I believe that you knew our faith was secure;
How you kept-up your smile with a cool disposition,
How you stuck in the fire with a new sense of reason.

You tell me to take it easy, but it’s not my style.
You saw me around the corner; it’ll pass you by.
I wanna hold you closer to connect my fortunes.
I want take you higher, take it out like we did before.

….most of us just dream about the things we’d like to be…

“Losing It” was released on Rush’s ninth studio album, Signals, in the fall of 1982. This album sounded amazing in 1982 and it remains one of my top five Rush albums. “Losing It” has always been one of my favorite tracks on the album, just a seriously beautiful song…..a gorgeous melody and truly beautiful lyrics by Neil….one of those tracks that, back in the day, I’d always have to lift the needle for a replay or three.

This is another one of those videos that I’d started so long ago, but just been sitting there unfinished…although I’d come close enough to give it a number in my video sequence at one time (#83..over a hundred videos ago!) It’s always difficult to go back into things that you started so long ago and make the video you’d originally started…usually I end up replacing most of the original stuff with different ideas and better footage. This one had some things I really liked and I just worked to exchange some of the 720p video for higher resolution 1080p clips. I liked some of the 720p stuff too much to exchange it for higher resolution, but I replaced most of the effects work with I’d done with the earlier 720p footage with new 1080p video…..added a few new effects and created some variations on those effects and it was done….basically the video I’d almost finished with a fresh coat of paint.

I’m doubly happy to have such an old video finished, and to have another Rush video (my 7th!) to share. I hope you enjoy the effort to this wonderful song.

As usual, HUGE THANKS! to everyone who’s art made this new art possible! THANK YOU!!!!

[Lyrics]

The dancer slows her frantic pace
In pain and desperation,
Her aching limbs and downcast face
Aglow with perspiration

Stiff as wire, her lungs on fire,
With just the briefest pause
The flooding through her memory,
The echoes of old applause.

She limps across the floor
And closes her bedroom door…

The writer stares with glassy eyes
Defies the empty page
His beard is white, his face is lined

And streaked with tears of rage.

Thirty years ago, how the words would flow
With passion and precision,
But now his mind is dark and dulled
By sickness and indecision

And he stares out the kitchen door
Where the sun will rise no more…

Some are born to move the world
To live their fantasies
But most of us just dream about
The things we’d like to be
Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it
For you, the blind who once could see
The bell tolls for thee…

There’s A Time….There’s A Word

Time And A Word was the title track from Yes’s 2nd album which was released in the summer of 1970. This track is one of my very favorite early Yes tracks.

This is another video that I started a long time ago and am only now getting around to finishing. This was one of those videos that went through several major edits. The first image I collected when I’d originally started work on the video was William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s The Wave (1896), which I wanted to build the video around. I wanted to try and make the first part of the video match the first part of the song, few effects and limited color….then push the effects and color to try and match the glorious chorus sequences. The result just didn’t ever work out….the two styles just clashed and even though I tried some things to pull them together (mainly street traffic with and without effects), the result was always jarring and unpleasant.

The other main frustration was trying to reduce the blocky artifacting that kept nagging this video….still can’t figure out why some videos look absolutely horrible unless you watch them in 1080p?! This is probably the worst video I’ve done in that regards….I don’t know why (but it must have something to do with the specific effects and rendering processes I used), but trust me….this video looks pretty godawful unless you watch it at highest resolution….and then parts of it look pretty beautiful!

In the end, I pulled several pretty cool effects out and worked a few new ones mostly to The Wave….so yeah, you get lots of slight variations on that image….but as per my usual style, not too much more than normal. 😉

Anyway….as usual, I hope you enjoy the effort!

SPECIAL THANKS to everyone who’s art contributed to this new art….THANK YOU!!!!!

[Lyrics]
In the morning when you rise,
Do you open up your eyes, see what I see?
Do you see the same things ev’ry day?
Do you think of a way to start the day
Getting things in proportion?
Spread the news and help the world go ’round.
Have you heard of a time that will help us get it together again?
Have you heard of the word that will stop us going wrong?
Well, the time is near and the word you’ll hear
When you get things in perspective.
Spread the news and help the word go round.

There’s a time and the time is now and it’s right for me,
It’s right for me, and the time is now.
There’s a word and the word is love and it’s right for me,
It’s right for me, and the word is love.

Have you heard of a time that will help get it together again?
Have you heard of the word that will stop us going wrong?
Well, the time is near and the word you’ll hear
When you get things in perspective.
Spread the news and help the word go round.

There’s a time and the time is now and it’s right for me,
It’s right for me, and the time is now.
There’s a word and the word is love and it’s right for me,
It’s right for me, and the word is love.
There’s a time and the time is now and it’s right for me,
It’s right for me, and the time is now.
There’s a word and the word is love and it’s right for me,

Choosing which thumb to use to best represent a video sometimes drives me crazy!  Different ones work better for different reasons and I just never really know which works best.

WOW! Think I found the first really GREAT thing this blog can do for me…..get input on thumb art! 😉

If you have a preference let me know!  PS…I originally selected #4 but then changed almost immediately after upload to #2!
