Mad Man Moon – Genesis (1976) SACD Remaster FLAC 1080p Video ~MetalGuruMessiah~

“Mad Man Moon” was released on Genesis’ seventh studio album, A Trick of the Tail, in February 1976. Hadn’t done any Genesis in a while, but happy to get around to finishing another old project from one of the albums from my favorite Genesis era. To my longtime friends; thanks for sticking around…and to new viewers of my channel…thanks for watching! 🙂

A Trick of the Tail was the first album to feature drummer Phil Collins as lead vocalist, following Peter Gabriel’s departure.

The album was recorded at Relight Studios and mixed at Trident Studios in October/November 1975. It also marked the first album that the band would co-produce with David Hentschel. They would work with Hentschel for the n

A Trick of the Tail reached No.3 in the UK, remaining on the charts for 39 weeks, and No.31 in the US. Additionally, the album was certified Gold in the US by the RIAA in March 1990. Also according to Tony Banks in the essay that comes with Platinum Collection, the album doubled the band’s previous albums sales. This success was also financially crucial for Genesis who were $400,000 in debt by the time Peter Gabriel left.

This is the eighth video I’ve made for a Genesis song (and the third for a track from A Trick of the Tail..see “Ripples” https://youtu.be/iS6jt0ATanE & “Entangled” https://youtu.be/bqxEoPVEOOE. This video also features FLAC audio sourced from the 2007 SACD, absolutely the best way to hear this album …..other video links below lyrics.

Hope you enjoy the effort!

As usual HUGE THANKS to everyone who’s art made this new art possible…THANK YOU!!!!!

[Lyrics]
Was it summer when the river ran dry,
Or was it just another dam.
When the evil of a snowflake in June
Could still be a source of relief.
O how I love you, I once cried long ago,
But I was the one who decided to go.
To search beyond the final crest,
Though I’d heard it said just birds could dwell so high.

So I pretended to have wings for my arms
And took off in the air.
I flew to places which the clouds never see,
Too close to the deserts of sand,
Where a thousand mirages, the shepherds of lies
Forced me to land and take a disguise.
I would welcome a horse’s kick to send me back
If I could find a horse not made of sand.

If this desert’s all there’ll ever be
Then tell me what becomes of me.
A fall of rain?
That must have been another of your dreams,
A dream of mad man moon.

Hey man,
I’m the sand man.
And boy have I news for you;
They’re gonna throw you in gaol
And you know they can’t fail
’cause sand is thicker than blood.
But a prison in sand
Is a haven in hell,
For a gaol can give you a goal
[and a] goal can find you a role
On a muddy pitch in Newcastle,
Where it rains so much
You can’t wait for a touch
Of sun and sand, sun and sand…

Within the valley of shadowless death
They pray for thunderclouds and rain,
But to the multitude who stand in the rain
Heaven is where the sun shines.
The grass will be greener till the stems turn to brown
And thoughts will fly higher till the earth brings them down.
Forever caught in desert lands one has to learn
To disbelieve the sea.

If this desert’s all there’ll ever be
Then tell me what becomes of me.
A fall of rain?
That must have been another of your dreams,
A dream of mad man moon.

“You guys are crazy!” See you Down The Dolce Vita!

Down The Dolce Vita – Peter Gabriel (1977) 24-96 FLAC Audio HD 1080p Video ~MetalGuruMessiah~

“Down The Dolce Vita” was released on February 25th 1977 on Peter Gabriel’s first solo album, Peter Gabriel (the first of four with the same eponymous title…most fans refer to the album as Peter Gabriel “Car”.)

Peter Gabriel’s first two solo records (“Car” in 1977 and “Scratch” in 1978) were very popular with me when I was attending high school during the ’77-’78 period when they were released, and his third and fourth (“Melt” in 1980 and “Security” in 1982) when I was attending college in the ’80-’82 period. Although I’ve started a few videos for songs from his first two albums, this is the first Peter Gabriel video I’ve uploaded. I thought one of the ones I’d already started would be finished first, however this one jumped in front of them when I came across the old video with the throbbing/pulsing effect (from Oskar Fischinger’s 1927 short “Berlin Wandering”) and immediately thought of “Down The Dolce Vita”. The video was finished very quickly, and although it could certainly benefit from some fine tuning, I was actually satisfied with the result of the first (and only!) render enough to go ahead and upload it. I hope you enjoy the effort!

The album was produced by Bob Ezrin. Gabriel and Ezrin assembled a team of musicians, including King Crimson main-man Robert Fripp, to record the album. Upon the album’s release, Gabriel began touring with a seven-piece band under his own name.

The photo on the cover is of Peter Gabriel sitting in the front passenger seat of a Lancia Flavia, owned by Storm Thorgerson, co-founder of Hipgnosis and the cover’s designer. For the shoot, which took place in Wandsworth, the car was sprayed with a water hose. The black-and-white image was then hand-coloured and reflections modified by artist Richard Manning using a scalpel.

An alternate proposal was to feature a photograph of Peter Gabriel wearing contact lenses intended to give his eyes the appearance of metallic ball bearings, but it was never produced.

Nick Kent, writing in the NME in 1978, described the album as “a fine record with at least one 24-carat irresistible classic in “Solsbury Hill” and a strong supporting cast of material that, all in all, in a year besmeared with great albums was, in retrospect, sorely underrated.”

[Lyrics]
“Hey Mac, see you down the Dolce Vita!
“Get back, we don’t have time
‘Cos I hear we’re sending off the heroes
When the yera goes, (they’re) out of the bay,
Trying to find a way
to make it alive”

“So long,” said four men to their families
“Be strong till we get back home
And if not, take care of all the children
Until then just hope and pray
We’re gonna find a way
to make it alive”

“You guys are crazy!”

They shout and then we leave the harbour.
In doubt, they’re acting weird
And the sea is whipping up a welcome
If hell come we’re all easy prey,
Trying to find a way
to make it alive”

“You guys are crazy!”

The captain’s hand shook for
the guys to get in place
He said, “Let’s look behind your face”.
With each corner covered, they were all around
Waiting for the midnight bell to sound.

“Out of sight,” cried Aeron through his glasses
“Don’t fight” said Gorham’s smile

All the while, his hand was on my shoulder
I was scared of being an easy prey,

Trying to find a way
to make it alive”

(I won’t be easy prey trying to find a way to make it alive.)

“Sometimes entangled in your own dreams…” The year is 1976, the band is Genesis, the album is A Trick Of The Tail, the song is “Entangled”.

Back in the day when these 3 records were current, it was sacrilege in some circles to state a preference for the post-Gabriel Genesis (still is in some of those circles!), however I’m proud to say that I’ve always been among those rabid fans of this mid-period sting of albums starting with early 1976’s A Trick Of The Tail, late 1976’s Wind And Wuthering, and 1978’s …And Then There Were Three. I believe they produced some of the most beautiful progressive music by any band ever during this period….of course I still listen to both early period and later period work by the band, but none of it comes close to the stuff they did in the mid to late 70’s. I think I’ve mentioned it before on some of my Genesis videos but it bears repeating… ***If you are as much a fan of this music as I am, and if you want to experience something mindblowingly beautiful….this music enveloping you in sound like you’ve never experienced it before ….buy a DVDA – SACD player and listen to it in 5.1…..one word; OMG! 😉

This is the seventh video I’ve made for a Genesis song (and the second for a track from A Trick of the Tail (link to “Ripples” and other Genesis videos below). I was mostly finished with “Mad Man Moon” (coming soon) and during editing I ended up with some effects that needed to go, and which I thought I’d use for a foundation for “Entangled” (mainly the clip of the kayak guy which I thought was a nice match to the rhythm and feel of the song). The image of the row houses is something I originally worked on for BOC’s “Morning Final” and then used heavily in The Waterboys’ “Old England”….THEN held up on finishing those videos when I realized the image would work PERFECTLY with that little ditty from Wind and Wuthering (can you guess which one? LOL!)…..now after holding on to the image for years to make the impact I hoped for….I end up using it in “Entangled”? LOL! Hint: you will see it featured again! 😉

Hope you enjoy the effort!

As usual HUGE THANKS to everyone who’s art made this new art possible…THANK YOU!!!!!

[Lyrics]
When you’re asleep they may show you
Aerial views of the ground
Freudian slumber empty of sound

Over the rooftops and houses
Lost as it tries to be seen
Fields of incentive covered with green

Mesmerized children are playing
Meant to be seen but not heard
Stop me from dreaming, don’t be absurd, absurd

Well, if we can help you we will
You’re looking tired and ill
As I count backwards
Your eyes become heavier still

Sleep, won’t you allow yourself fall?
Nothing can hurt you at all
With your consent
We can experiment further still

Madrigal music is playing
Voices can faintly be heard
Please leave this patient undisturbed

Sentenced to drift far away now
Nothing is quite what it seems
Sometimes entangled in your own dreams, in your dreams

Well, if we can help you we will
Soon as you’re tired and ill
With your consent
We can experiment further still

Well, thanks to our kindness and skill
You’ll have no trouble until
You catch your breath
And the nurse will present you the bill

For Awhile – Tony Banks (1979) HQ Audio Remaster HD Video

“For Awhile” was released in the fall of 1979 on Tony Banks’ debut solo album, A Curious Feeling. I was big into Genesis during the mid-late 70’s and picked up this record immediately upon it’s release as I always thought Tony Banks was played some of the most beautiful keyboard I’d ever heard. I was not disappointed and found the album very enjoyable….”For Awhile” is a really beautiful tune….I love it still….hope the vid finds it a few new fans….and that those familiar with it find it a new enjoyable presentation.

As usual HUGE THANKS to everyone who’s art made this new art possible….THANK YOU!!! and THANK YOU for watching and supporting the vids. Please give it a comment and like if would….it’s such a drag to make videos to compete with “videos” that are really just an album cover set to music! 😉

I feel it leading me
Away to I don’t know where
I might be back someday
But the people and things will change
And no one will remember me then

Don’t need no sympathy
For soon I’ll forget everything
I feel it fading now
And I see in the eyes of my love
Tears for how it might have been

It sure felt good for a while
Yes, it was good for a while
I found somebody to take my hand
To the promised land of the loved

Now as the night draws in
A dark with no promise of dawn
I feel my eyes grow dim
As I see in the eyes of my love
Tears for how it might have been

It sure felt good for a while
Yes, it was good for a while
I found somebody to take my hand
To the promised land of the loved

Yes, it was good for a while
It sure felt good for a while
I found somebody to take my hand
To the promised land of the loved

“Hey Hey there’s a snowman….Hey what a snowman”

Wishing a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year’s to everyone! Thank you all for your kind words for the videos

“Snowbound” was released on the album …And Then There Were Three, their ninth studio album, in the spring of 1978. The three mid-perid Genesis albums (after Peter Gabriel departed and before they traded their heavy progressive sound for a more pop-orientated and commercial one) are by far my favorite the band ever recorded (yes, that does include the more critically acclaimed Gabriel years!). I’ve done several other videos for tracks from those albums and included some of my personal thoughts for them.

After some requests for a Christmas video, I actually went in and (almost) finished one for my favorite Christmas song (“Step Into Christmas”). I was surprised and disappointed to find that this song would be blocked worldwide (strange since Sir Elton’s music seems happy to be shared and allowed to play?…but I believe I can understand why this particular track is more tightly controlled.) I thought about re-working the vid to another song, but the thought of re-rendering the numerous effects to other art didn’t make me feel any joy…so it will have to wait until another time. Next idea was to kill two birds and do “Snowbound”….Christmas-y AND another favorite mid-period Genesis track! 😉

So here is my Christmas song, ALTHOUGH…it’s not really a Christmas song at all and is actually a very dark tale.
(If you’re interested I found this great lyric interpretation by Jamie Snuggles | 2/16/13

*****This is (to me) great example of the visual story telling ability of many of the earlier Genesis songs. It has a rather Grimm’s feel to me, in that the story teller is describing a traveler who chooses a poor night to sleep outside and is encased by an unexpected winter snowstorm and subsequently dies during the night from exposure. The local children arrive in the morning to play, (“here they come to play their magic games”) only to discover a “snowman” on their playground. What follows is something best left to the imagination (“Carve their names upon his frozen hand”)(‘Here in a ball that they made/ From the snow on the ground,/ See it rolling away/ Wild eyes to the sky”)(They’ll never never know”) also the line (“pray for the Snowman”) infers that this was once a living person) or within the confines of a horror movie scriptwriter’s mind. The score is gentle and soothing, but the story is anything but.*****)

It’s a beautiful song and I hope you enjoy the video.

Special thanks to everyone who’s art contributed to this new art….THANK YOU!!!

And THANK YOU for watching!!!

[Lyrics]

Lay your body down upon the midnight snow,
Feel the cold of winter in your hair
Here in a world of your own,
In a casing that’s grown
To a children’s delight
That arrived overnight.

And here they come to play their magic games
Carving names upon your frozen hand.
Here in a world of your own,
Like a sleeper whose eyes
Sees the pain with surprise
As it smothers your cries
They’ll never never know.

Hey there’s a Snowman
Hey, Hey what a Snowman
Pray for the Snowman
Ooh, Ooh what a Snowman
They say a snow year’s a good year
Filled with the love of all who lie so deep.

Smiling faces tear your body to the ground
Covered red that only we can see.
Here in a ball that they made
From the snow on the ground,
See it rolling away
Wild eyes to the sky
They’ll never, never know.

Hey there’s a Snowman
Hey what a Snowman
Pray for the Snowman
Ooh, Ooh what a Snowman
They say a snow year’s a good year
Filled with the love of all who lie so deep.

Hey there goes the Snowman
Hey,hey there what a Snowman
Hey there lies the Snowman
Hey he was a Snowman
They say a snow year’s a good year
Filled with the love of all who lie so deep.

Hey,there goes the snowman
Hey,hey there what a snowman…
