*Extra Blackbird Version: This version includes extra blackbird chirping throughout the track….although it is a well recognized crime against mankind to alter ONE NOTE of what The Beatles recorded, and I know I’ll feel the wrath (and I’ll have to atone at some point!)….I couldn’t resist experimenting with the allowing the actual blackbird to chirp….I kind of like the effect myself, but I’ll probably upload a version in its unaltered glory for the purists. Maybe edit the video a bit while I’m at it for some variety?

Although I frequently do vids for solo-Beatles tracks and The Beatles will always be my favorite group, I just don’t do many Beatles videos (think this is only the 4th!) since they have all mostly been done so much, but I’ve been thinking about a few I’d like to try something with and “Blackbird” was an fun one to do. “Blackbird” was released in November of 1968 on The Beatles’ ninth studio album, eponymous titled The Beatles. The album is widely known and referred to as “The White Album”, a double album, its plain white sleeve has no graphics or text other than the band’s name embossed (and, on the early LP and CD releases, a serial number).

Most of the songs on the album were written during March and April 1968 at a Transcendental Meditation course in Rishikesh, India. Although the group’s experience of the course was mixed, the lack of external influences or drugs sparked the band’s creativity and they returned to England with around 40 new songs. They regrouped at George Harrison’s house, Kinfauns, in May and recorded demos of 26 songs, enough for a double album. The group returned to EMI Studios to record the new material, with sessions lasting through to mid October, but their experiences in Rishikesh did not help motivate them in the studio. Because the Beatles had unlimited recording time, there was little attempt to rehearse anything as a group, so everything was captured on tape, after which they would overdub voices and additional instruments. Arguments broke out between the Beatles, and witnesses in the studio saw John Lennon and Paul McCartney quarrel with one another. The feuds intensified when Lennon’s new partner, Yoko Ono, started attending the sessions. In addition, McCartney was not happy about the avant-garde piece “Revolution 9”, while Lennon disliked several of McCartney’s songs. After a series of problems, including producer George Martin taking a sudden leave of absence and engineer Geoff Emerick quitting, Ringo Starr left the band briefly in August, and consequently missed the recording of two tracks. The same tensions continued throughout the following year, leading to the group’s eventual disbandment in April 1970.

On release, The Beatles received mixed reviews from music journalists. Most critics found its satirical songs unimportant and apolitical amid a turbulent political and social climate, although some praised Lennon and McCartney’s songwriting on the album. The band and Martin have since debated whether the group should have released a single album instead. Nonetheless, The Beatles reached number one on the charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States and has since been viewed by some critics as one of the greatest albums of all time.

I’m a-wonderin’ if she remembers me at all…The Waterboys cover Dylan’s “Girl From The North Country”

The Waterboys’ cover of Bob Dylan’s “Girl From The North Country” was released in June 2002 on the Dylan tribute cover CD from British music magazine Uncut. Some cover albums are great, some not so much….I think both of the Uncut Dylan tribute albums (there was a Vol. 1 & 2) fall in the the former category. This track is a longtime Dylan favorite, and as a huge fan of The Waterboys, it was an easy choice for a quick video. I hope you enjoy the video and maybe get a chance to hear this great cover for the first time. I cannot recommend the Uncut tribute albums enough, the Dylan and Rolling Stones ones especially, but they have others that are great as well.

The June 2002 issue of Uncut comes in two versions with two different cover discs (Hard Rain Vols 1 & 2) containing between them 31 Dylan covers. Like the Rolling Stones double tribute in December 2001, it’s eclectic and includes several specially recorded tracks.

The Band feature on disc one with “When I Paint My Masterpiece” from the remastered Cahoots. Emmylou Harris also features doing ‘Every Grain of Sand’. Paul Weller does ‘I Shall Be Released’.

Rarities include versions of ‘She’s Your Lover Now’ (Howard Devoto / Luxuria) and ‘Sitting on a Barbed Wire Fence’ (Thurston, Kim & Epic), and unusual takes include Ani DiFranco’s ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Shelter from the Storm’ from Cassandra Wilson .

Among the exclusive tracks are The Waterboys doing ‘Girl from the North Country’, Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth attempting ‘Visions of Johanna’ and Johnny Marr doing ‘Don’t Think Twice’.

Judging from the Stones one, it’ll sell out very fast. The same issue has various worthies (including Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Martin Carthy, Brian Ferry, Jackie Leven, Tom Waits, Natalie Merchant, Simon Nicol) voting on Dylan’s 40 Greatest Songs. ‘Tell Me Momma’ gets in among the usual suspects.

“I can nearly understand …” Roxy Music sets a groove on fire with classic Avalon track, “The Main Thing”.

“The Main Thing” was my very favorite track on Roxy Music’s eighth and final album, Avalon, from the spring of 1982. It was recorded in 1981–82 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and is generally regarded as the culmination of the smoother, more adult-oriented sound of the band’s later work. It was the band’s most successful studio album, reaching No. 1 in the UK (for 3 weeks) and staying on the album charts for over a year. Although it only climbed as high as No. 53, Avalon is notable as the band’s only platinum record in the US.

A single, “More Than This,” preceded the album and was a Top 10 hit in Britain, Australia, and several European countries. The title track was released as the album’s second single and also became a UK Top 20 hit. A third extract, “Take a Chance With Me”, with a remixed version of album track “The Main Thing” on the b-side, reached the UK Top 30 and was Roxy Music’s last UK hit single to date.

Avalon was a huge hit for Roxy Music in 1982 and it is unfortunately the last album they ever recorded. The band has always had a considerable cult following, especially in Europe, but seldom achieved the commercial success of other popular bands. It seemed that the success of Avalon would ensure the band continued to reach for similar artistic and commercial achievements, but it never happened and Avalon stands as their final work.

“The Main Thing” is one of the lesser recognized songs on the album but it has always appealed to me due to it’s insistent and infectious groove…..the driving beat was close to the disco music popular in the day, but more sleek and sophisticated….the hallmark of all Roxy Music songs.

My original video for this track (#25 wow!) was a complete disaster…it’s long been a source of avoidance for me because it was just a really dark and ugly video. When I think about remaking some of my old stuff, “The Main Thing” is always one of the first that comes to mind….I always thought I’d just update what I’d done keeping the original concept (moonlight on the water, hearts, spinning “love”, and embracing couple art) with better, brighter result….I started with that video and began adjusting and in the end there was barely anything left of the original; (I guess I’ll keep my first effort up for awhile to link to the new one, but it really needs to disappear eventually; watch it if you dare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXt1q-TXVZA

Avalon was one of the first SACD’s I bought when I got my SACD/DVD-A player and I loved what they did with the multi-track….wow, I wish there was some way for me to share that experience for the biggest fans of “Avalon” tat don’t have the capabilities….just something really special!

In 2003, Virgin reissued Avalon on Hybrid Super Audio CD with a new 5.1-channel surround sound remix by the original production team of Rhett Davies (the producer) and Bob Clearmountain (the mixing engineer). The original 1982 stereo mix is left intact and is the same for the CD layer and for the HD layer, allegedly being transferred from analogue master tapes to DSD and processed in DSD throughout the process. The surround part of the HD layer includes the full album in the original running order plus the bonus track “Always Unknowing”, whose original stereo mix is only available on CD on the 4-CD boxed set The Thrill of It All and in the 2012 Roxy Music Complete Recordings boxed set.

The guitar parts in “The Main Thing” and “Take a Chance With Me” are noticeably more prominent in the multi-channel mix than in the stereo mix. Guitar, saxophone, synthesizer, and percussion parts are often placed in the rear part of the sound field, while lead vocals tend to stick to the front centre, as opposed to being mixed in dual-mono in front left and right like in the somewhat traditional 2.0 stereo mixing.

In an interview with Sound on Sound regarding the surround-sound remix of Avalon, Clearmountain stated “This record probably means more to me than anything I’ve ever done. I’ve had more comments and compliments on this album by far than anything else I’ve ever done.

The sun will lead us….”Soon”. An amazing new edit for the classic Yes track from 1974, from 2003’s The Ultimate Yes: 35th Anniversary Collection.

“Soon” was released by the progressive rock group Yes on their seventh studio album, Relayer, in the winter of 1974. It was actually the closing segment of the Side One’s full length epic, “The Gates Of Delirium” and was released as a single edit in January of 1975. This is a new, longer edit of the track that was released in 2003.

Stuck at home for a couple of days with respiratory infection and feeling like crap….inbetween sleeping and more sleeping I thought it had been sometime since I’d done a Yes vid, so I thought I’d resurrect an ancient video I started for “Soon” years ago, and when I went back to pull it out to finish I realized that everything needed to go…..this is a much different affair than the one I originally had planned….simpler and I think it works better for this tune. Hope you enjoy my little video for this longtime favorite!

It’s nearly a couple minutes longer, and my preferred version…..so I dug it up for the Yes fanatics out there. Yes, I’m obsessive about my music, but “I’m not the only one”….talking you some of you guys….and this one if for ya’ll! 🙂

“The Gates of Delirium” is a 22-minute track that Anderson described as “a war song, a battle scene, but it’s not to explain war or denounce it, really … There’s a prelude, a charge, a victory tune, and peace at the end, with hope for the future.” Moraz recalled discussing War and Peace and Leo Tolstoy with Anderson as they both read the book, after which Moraz showed Anderson a French science fiction comic book with “Delirious” in the title. Moraz said, “he related to it immediately so I think that perhaps as a title ‘The Gates of Delirium’ came from that”. Anderson and White stopped by a scrap yard and bought metal car parts which were used as percussion during the song’s battle section. During the battle section, White formed a tower of the parts and pushed it over to make a crashing sound. The track concludes with a gentle melody and a lyrical prayer for peace which later became known as “Soon”.

Relayer was the bands only studio album recorded with keyboardist Patrick Moraz in the band’s line-up; he joined in August that year after Rick Wakeman left over differences regarding Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973) to pursue his solo career.

Following Wakeman’s decision to leave the band, the remaining members proceeded to work on new material for Relayer. The group wrote and rehearsed new songs and proceeded to record in Squire’s home in Virginia Water, Surrey. Relayer has the same format as Close to the Edge (1972), with one track occupying side one and two tracks on side two. The album saw Yes experiment with elements of funk and jazz fusion.

Upon release, Relayer helped continue the band’s success in the mid-1970s, peaking at number 4 in the UK and number 5 in the U.S. The closing section of “The Gates of Delirium,” titled “Soon,” was released as a single in January 1975.

In May 1974, after Tales from Topographic Oceans tour in support of their ambitious double album Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973) ended, keyboardist Rick Wakeman decided to leave Yes as he could not understand its concept and disagreed with the musical direction the band took. The band’s line-up during this time included singer Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, and drummer Alan White.

While the band started writing and rehearsing for Relayer, several keyboardists were auditioned including Greek musician Vangelis. As Phil Carson of Atlantic Records later explained, “He came to London and tried out Yes but it didn’t really gel … Vangelis wouldn’t get on a plane and wouldn’t fly anywhere and Yes were about to go on tour.” (Vangelis with Yes is another one of those perfect matches of talent in rock music history that it’s fun to think about….and this one nearly happened!)

At the suggestion of music journalist and author Chris Welch, the band invited Swiss-born Patrick Moraz of Refugee to a try out session at Squire’s home in August 1974. Moraz used Vangelis’s keyboards for his first session. The band liked what he did, and Moraz subsequently joined full time.

Uh, oh, I touched your star

Touch and Go – The Cars (1980) 192kHz/24bit Audio Remaster HD Video

“Touch and Go” was released on the Cars’ third studio album, Panorama, in the summer of 1980.

Until now, The Cars have been one of the last of my very favorite bands that I hadn’t made even a single video for….though there are of course parts scattered about mind and drives! 🙂 This was a band that I was a huge fan of until the very end (of course Ric released a string of amazing strong solo albums….also thinking of some of my favorites in those mines!)….wow, we used to have a good time all over the place with The Cars playing in the background. This video was to be just another of my simple attempts at a stylish cartoony moving picture edit and it was actually almost finished before something went terribly wrong and even after every trick I knew to save the project, I finally gave up and almost decided not to redo it….I eventually had to re-render the video and start from scratch with the editing….ugh. ;-( It’s difficult to make the original low res source video (again for these efforts I really want to try and achieve the effect of a painting in motion!) I had look spanking new in HD 1080p, but you at least get the 24bit Remastered track as the source…..which sounds amazing! I hope you enjoy “Touch and Go” and THANKS FOR WATCHING!

Elliot Easton is such a truly great guitar player….a good sized chunk of my very favorite and tastiest! guitar solos are Elliot Easton’s….put on any Cars album and listen to Elliot’s work if you need to be reminded! 😉

The record marked a change from the upbeat pop rock and hard rock of the group’s previous albums, representing a more aggressive and experimental sound. It was not as commercially successful as The Cars’ previous or subsequent albums (until 1987’s Door to Door). However, it did hit #5 on the Billboard 200 chart and has been certified platinum by the RIAA.

As a single off the album, the song “Touch and Go” peaked at #37 on the Billboard 200.
