This is love This is la la la la love….I miss George Harrison!

This Is Love – George Harrison (1987) Remastered HQ Audio

“This Is Love” was released on George Harrison’s eleventh solo album, Cloud Nine, in the winter of 1979. This album was widely hailed as one of the greatest of George’s career.

***From Wiki:
Frustrated with the changing musical climate, George Harrison suspended his recording career in the early 1980’s. Instead of recording, he opted to pursue other interests, including film production with his own company, Handmade Films. It was a musically silent period for Harrison.

By late 1986, after a substantial break, Harrison felt the desire to make music again. He asked former Electric Light Orchestra leader and fellow musician Jeff Lynne to co-produce a new album with him. Harrison entered his home studio Friar Park in Henley-on-Thames on 5 January 1987 to begin recording his first new commercial album in five years.

Besides Harrison and Lynne, other artists involved in the recording sessions included Jim Keltner and Ringo Starr on drums, Eric Clapton on guitar and both Gary Wright and Elton John on piano (Elton John was recovering from his vocal surgery at the time). With new-found enthusiasm, Harrison actively promoted the album, even appearing with Starr at the Prince’s Trust Concert that June to perform “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

The album has consistently been praised by rock critics. Writing in Rolling Stone magazine, David Wild described it as “an expertly crafted, endlessly infectious record that constitutes Harrison’s best album since 1970’s inspired All Things Must Pass”. Wild also acknowledged Lynne’s input as co-producer and praised “When We Was Fab”, “Cloud Nine”, “That’s What It Takes” and “Wreck of the Hesperus” as “sublime pop”. In The New York Times, Stephen Holden noted the release as “crucial” to Harrison’s career, adding: “A pleasingly tuneful album, its sound is deliberately quaint, as it explicitly evokes the Beatles’ more romantic psychedelic music of the late 1960’s.” Less impressed, Daniel Brogan of the Chicago Tribune opined: “Cloud Nine plods hopelessly. Most of the blame must fall on Harrison, though producer Jeff Lynne’s influence is far too prevalent … The album is occasionally redeemed by the deft guitar interplay between Harrison and Eric Clapton, as well as the perky single ‘Got My Mind Set on You.'”

Reviewing for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine writes that “Harrison crafted a remarkably consistent and polished comeback effort with Cloud Nine” and considers it is “one of his very best albums”. Among other recent reviews, Uncut magazine describes Cloud Nine as “endowed with undeniable charm” and Rolling Stone considers it to be a “late-career masterwork” from Harrison.
***END WIKI

I had been following George’s career and buying all his solo records…(they’re all great…still pisses me off that Rolling Stone gave him so much grief, giving most of his records after All Things Must Pass very poor reviews….in those days when Rolling Stone held such sway, I can imagine the frustration he felt….too bad these critics couldn’t just hear the deep beauty of his music and maybe he would have released a few more records!)…and it was so wonderful to finally have a new George Harrison after waiting 5 long years since his last release (Gone Troppo in 1982) and this album was well worth the wait! I can recall many years earlier wondering how cool it would be for George to do an album with ELO….it was great to see that happen later when George and Jeff worked together for many years…..a match made in heaven! 😉

I always loved the video George produced for “This Is Love” and wanted to try and pump it up with more color and a few additional effects, and lose some of the low-res noise for HD…lotza layers to achieve the effects….I hope you enjoy the result. (Check out the original version if you’ve never seen it before….I had to obscure/blur things quite a bit to make it look good in HD, and some of the clarity of the original is lost).

[Lyrics]
Vicious words drift away from their meanings
And the sun melts the chill from our lives
Helping us all to remember what we came here for
This is love
This is la la la la love
This is love
This is la la la la love

Little things that will change you forever
May appear from out of the blue
Making fools of everybody who don’t understand
This is love
This is la la la la love
This is love
This is la la la la love

This is love, this is love
This is love, this is la la la la love

Since our problems have been our own creation
They also can be overcome
When we use the power provided free to everyone
This is love
This is la la la la love
This is love
This is la la la la love

This is love
This is la la la la love
This is love
This is la la la la love
