Happy 95th Birthday Nelson Mandela!

“I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.”
Nelson Mandela

Could You Be Loved was released on the final album by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Uprising, in the spring of 1980. Bob would pass away the following year.

I was in college when we heard Bob Marley had died and this was kind of a big deal…his music was very popular on campus and we used to play his albums constantly. It seemed every friend I had in those days was a big Bob Marley fan. One of my great regrets (along with not seeing Roger Waters era Pink Floyd) related to music was missing an opportunity to see Bob Marley on his last tour (of course we didn’t know it was his last)…a couple friends and I ALMOST finalized plans to catch him on tour, but for one reason or the other we didn’t make it.

I started a couple of Bob Marley videos (including one for the album version of this tune) over a year ago, but it was pointless to finish them at that time due to various issues. Was thrilled to be able to finally do something for one of this incredibly talented man….one of a few of my very favorite artists for which I’d not yet created a video for. Bob Marley’s music remains a constant in my life.

This video is simple, but to me captures the essence of this track. It was such a joyful experience to create this video…..I couldn’t resist numerous repeats of a couple of clips of the children following the camera (actually I enjoyed the effect so much, I decided to go with the 12″ Mix bonus track from the Deluxe Edition of the album)! I’ve watched it numerous times and it seems each time I find a new joyful, funny, beautiful face to watch….watching these kids who have so little be so happy might end up something I go back now and again when I’m feeling down. Hopefully you’ll find the combination of Bob’s amazing song and those expressions of pure joyful innocence as powerful as I do.

Till next one…..”say something!” 😉

As dedicated in the credits: “For Nelson & …..for the beauty of Africa.”

As always HUGE THANKS to everyone who’s art contributed to this new art….THANK YOU!!!

[Lyrics]
Could you be loved and be loved?
Could you be loved and be loved?

Don’t let them fool ya,
Or even try to school ya! Oh, no!
We’ve got a mind of our own,
So go to hell if what you’re thinking is not right!
Love would never leave us alone,
A-yin the darkness there must come out to light.

Could you be loved and be loved?
Could you be loved, wo now! – and be loved?

(The road of life is rocky and you may stumble too,
So while you point your fingers someone else is judging you)
Love your brotherman!
(Could you be – could you be – could you be loved?
Could you be – could you be loved?
Could you be – could you be – could you be loved?
Could you be – could you be loved?)

Don’t let them change ya, oh! –
Or even rearrange ya! Oh, no!
We’ve got a life to live.
They say: only – only –

only the fittest of the fittest shall survive –
Stay alive! Eh!

Could you be loved and be loved?
Could you be loved, wo now! – and be loved?

(You ain’t gonna miss your water until your well runs dry;
No matter how you treat him, the man will never be satisfied.)
Say something! (Could you be – could you be – could you be loved?
Could you be – could you be loved?)
Say something! Say something!
(Could you be – could you be – could you be loved?)
Say something! (Could you be – could you be loved?)
Say something! Say something! (Say something!)
Say something! Say something! (Could you be loved?)
Say something! Say something! Reggae, reggae!
Say something! Rockers, rockers!
Say something! Reggae, reggae!
Say something! Rockers, rockers!
Say something! (Could you be loved?)
Say something! Uh!
Say something! Come on!
Say something! (Could you be – could you be – could you be loved?)
Say something! (Could you be – could you be loved?)
Say something! (Could you be – could you be – could you be loved?)
Say something! (Could you be – could you be loved?) /fadeout/
