Happy Birthday Alan White!

“Going For The One” is the title track from Yes’s eighth studio album which was released in the summer of 1977. This is such a special record for me and I recall so clearly and strongly the circumstances of it’s release. I was a sophmore in high school and although I was well into my journey of seeking to listen to all the rock bands of the time, Yes was one of those bands that I knew really only by their singles….I hadn’t yet delved into a Yes album. However, this album was a huge deal and there was an extreme amount of anticipation, advertising, and awareness surrounding the pending new album from Yes. This was their first album together after an extended break, their last album had been Relayer in 1974…and it was also noted in all magazines (during my teen years there were only 4 really important magazines…Rolling Stone, Cream, Circus and….of course Mad) that Rick Wakeman would be back on board.

So I wasn’t really sure of what to expect when I first sliced open that cellophane, slid the record out of the sleeve, twisted side one down on the turntable and listened to those first AMAZING notes of the title song come thorough…..but those notes and all the ones that followed made an unforgettable impression on me…this album was a revelation unlike few I experienced before of after in all my years of listening to music. A couple of weeks after buying the LP, I was flying out to Los Angeles with my family to spend six weeks with my dad who was working in the motion picture industry….I remember begging my mom to stop at a record store near the airport so I could pick up a few 8-tracks to play on my new (then KILLER!) portable player for the flight and afterwards….I purchased Going For The One, Animals, Low, I Robot, Trans-Europe Express and Little Queen (the first three I already had on LP, but I wasn’t about to spend the rest of the summer without them!). I still associate some of these records with that summer in LA, especially Going For The One….my first Yes LP and I couldn’t wait to get home and start picking up their older albums.

This is my very first video for one of their songs. I’d long hoped to do something, but finally the time was right! 🙂 tried to incorporate the album art and tried to focus on the skyscraper/mountain motifs.

Thanks once again to Moving Art Channel, this time for the quick flyby of the skyscraper….visit one of the most amazing channels of all:

Dedicated to my wonderful friends Dan & Donna for their unfaltering support & encouragement…and also for having themselves created some of the most beautiful videos ever for some Yes songs.

As usual, hope you enjoy the effort!

[Lyrics]

One two
One two three four

Get the idea
Cross around the track
When you leap on the flank
Of a thoroughbred racing chaser

Get the feel
As the rhythm flows
Would you like to go
And shoot the mountain masses?

And here you stand no taller than the grass seas
And should you really chase so hard
The truth of sport plays rings around you

Going for the one
Going for the one

Get in the way
As the tons of water
Racing with you
Crash into the rudders
Once at the start
Can you gamble that
You really surely
Really mean to finish

After seeing all your sense of fear diminish
As you treat danger as a pure connection
As you throw away all misconceptions

Going for the one
Going for the one
Going for-ward to

Listen in time
Taken so high
To touch, to move
Listen to life

Touching, touch time
Travel, twilight
Taken so high
Roundabout, sounding out
Love me so

Now the verses I’ve sang
Don’t add much weight
To the story in my head
So I’m thinking I should go and write a punchline

But they’re so hard to find
In my cosmic mind
So I think I’ll take
A look out of the window

When I think about you
I don’t feel low
Should I really chase so hard?
The truth of sport plays rings around you

Going for the one
Going for the one
Going for-ward to

Listen in time
Taken so high
To touch, to move
Listen to life

Touching, touch time
Travel, twilight
Taken so high
Taking your time

Turn on to love
Turnstile to one
Tender timing
Rocking, rolling

Listen in time
Taken so high
To touch, to move
Listen to life

Touching, touch time
Travel, twilight
Taken so high
Taking your time

Turn on to love
Turnstile to one
Tender timing
Rocking, rolling

Turn on to love
Turnstile to one
Tender timing
Rocking, rolling

Moments decide…
Moments delight…
Moments invite…
Talk about sending love…
Love…
Love…
Love…
Love
